Project Senselet

It is widely acknowledged that inefficiencies in healthcare supply chains are a significant challenge across low- and middle-income contexts, causing delays, shortages, and an increase in cost of medical supplies. This disrupts the provision of effective care and aggravates the disease burden for patients with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) – particularly when living in rural areas or settings impacted by a humanitarian crisis. With an aim to strengthen national NCD responses and improve the reliability of healthcare supply chains across Africa, an Alliance was formed in 2020 consisting of World Diabetes Foundation (WDF), Novo Nordisk A/S (NN) and LEARN Logistics by Kühne Foundation (KF-LEARN). In working towards realizing this goal, the alliance initiates joint projects to enhance and strengthen the capacities of people working within Healthcare Supply Chain Management (HSCM) currently in East-Africa.

Project SAfA

The Foundation Alliance for Africa (in its German origin “Stifter-Allianz für Afrika”), is an Alliance involving the donors Hanns R. Neumann Foundation (HRNS), Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevölkerung (DSW), and LEARN Logistics by Kühne Foundation. Since its foundation in 2021, the alliance has been implementing two projects in Ethiopia and Tanzania, respectively, with the objective to improve the living conditions particularly for youth in rural areas. Each of the three donors contribute its specific knowledge and expertise from different areas of development work to be integrated into one project approach. Bundling the knowhow agriculture, health and family planning, and logistics, SAfA not only achieves significant synergies, but also attracts third-party matching funds e.g., from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperations and Development (BMZ).

Project VillageReach Supply Chain Capacity Building

In 2024, VillageReach and LEARN Logistics started its collaboration in Malawi to assess the local educational needs in Malawi and help the universities with the curricula design, the structure of the study programs, and the delivery of health supply chain courses. Many universities lack the knowledge and teaching skills related to central subjects in the LSCM curricula and are short of staff to deliver the content to their students. Therefore, LEARN Logistics supports in building local capacities, i.e., the build-up of university faculty to deliver the programs. The overall approach is to engage and assist partners through the years with technical support for the implementation of the program and its continuity as it will promotes strong local commitment. The goal of this initiative is to create sustainable, high quality educational pathways for Malawians to pursue supply chain as a career, and to ensure that they have the right skills to manage well-functioning supply chains. All key activities will involve early engagement and technical consultations with key Ministries, Departments & Agencies (MDAs), and other relevant partners in country.
